Vigilantism in India refers to when a group metes out extralegal punishment to alleged lawbreakers. Vigilantism is also referred to as "mob justice". It is caused by perception of police corruption〔 〕 and delays in the judicial system,〔 and is usually practised on petty crooks.〔 〕 ==2011==
*In August 2011, ten suspected thieves from Andhra Pradesh were beaten to death with stones and wooden clubs by more than 2,000 villagers in Chikaballapur, Karnataka.〔 〕 Police were on the scene but were prevented by the mob from stopping the violence.〔
